Clack A8006 Fine Birm is a catalytic iron and manganese removal media engineered for domestic water treatment applications where backwash flow is limited. This granular filter medium precipitates dissolved iron and manganese without chemicals, requiring only periodic backwashing to maintain peak performance.
SPECIFICATIONS

Clack A8006 Fine Birm Technical Data

Model Number A8006
Media Type Fine Birm Granular Filter Media
Unit Weight 47.5 lbs per cubic foot
Backwash Flow Rate 8-10 GPM per square foot
Service Flow Rate Up to 5 GPM per square foot (domestic)
Recommended Bed Depth 24-30 inches (domestic installations)
pH Requirement 6.5+ for iron, 8.0-9.0 for manganese
Dissolved Oxygen Required Minimum 15% of iron/manganese content
INSTALLATION & USE

Setting Up Your Birm Filter System

  1. Install 8 inches or more of standard graded gravel as a supporting bed beneath the Birm media layer
  2. Add Fine Birm media to achieve a bed depth of 24-30 inches, ensuring 35-50% freeboard space above the media for backwash expansion
  3. Verify water conditions meet requirements: pH 6.5 or higher, dissolved oxygen at 15% of iron content, no hydrogen sulfide or oil present
  4. Backwash the system every 10-14 days at 8-10 GPM per square foot, or use an air wash injector if adequate flow is unavailable
COMPATIBILITY

Water Quality Requirements

Clack A8006 Fine Birm is designed for domestic water treatment systems with limited backwash capacity. The media requires specific water chemistry conditions to function effectively: no hydrogen sulfide, organic matter under 4-5 ppm, oil-free water, dissolved oxygen at least 15% of iron content, and pH above 6.5 for iron removal or 8.0-9.0 for manganese removal. Waters not meeting these requirements may need pre-treatment with aeration, Corosex neutralizing media, or chemical adjustment. Fine Birm is optimized for residential applications where backwash flow is restricted compared to the regular Birm grade (A8007). This product cannot be installed in California per regulatory restrictions.

🔧 If your backwash flow can't reach 8 GPM per square foot, install an air injector on the backwash line to create an air-assisted wash that maintains media cleanliness without requiring higher flow rates.
