Pur-Cal (A8021-50) Calcite - Neutralizes Low pH or Acidic Water - 0.55 CF 50 Lbs.
Pur-Cal Calcite pH Neutralizing Media
Pur-Cal A8021-50 is a naturally occurring calcium carbonate media engineered for controlled pH correction in acidic water systems. Its self-limiting chemistry raises pH only to a non-corrosive equilibrium, reducing copper and lead leaching without overcorrection that would require additional treatment stages.
pH Neutralization Process
Acidic Water Enters Bed
Low pH water flows through 24–30 inches of calcite media at 3–6 gpm per square foot, maximizing contact time with calcium carbonate granules.
Calcium Carbonate Releases
Acidic water slowly dissolves the calcite, releasing calcium carbonate into solution and raising pH toward neutral equilibrium between 7.0 and 8.0.
pH Stabilizes Automatically
Self-limiting chemistry stops further dissolution once non-corrosive pH is reached, preventing overcorrection and protecting downstream plumbing from metal leaching.
Media Maintenance Cycle
Periodic backwashing at 8–12 gpm per square foot reclassifies the bed and prevents packing. Media requires replenishment as calcite depletes over time.

| Volume | 0.55 Cubic Feet / 50 lbs |
| Mesh Size | 16 x 40 |
| Effective Size | 0.4 mm |
| Bulk Density | 90 lbs per cubic foot |
| Composition | 95% min. CaCO₃, 3% max. MgCO₃ |
| pH Range | 5.0–7.0 (inlet water) |
| Service Flow Rate | 3–6 gpm per square foot |
| Backwash Rate | 8–12 gpm per square foot |
| Bed Depth | 24–30 inches recommended |
| Freeboard | 50% of bed depth minimum |
System Requirements
Pur-Cal A8021-50 requires a gravel support bed and appropriate tank sizing for 50% freeboard above the media bed. Because calcite neutralization increases water hardness, a water softener may be necessary downstream for households with existing hard water or high service flow rates. This media is designed for pH correction in the 5.0–7.0 range; severely acidic water below pH 5.0 may require blended media or multiple treatment stages. Flow rates and bed depth should be adjusted based on local water chemistry and target pH levels.
