Strong acid cation resin removes positively charged ions including calcium, magnesium, sodium, and other dissolved metals from the water stream, replacing them with hydrogen ions

Strong base Type 1 anion resin captures negatively charged ions including chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and critically, silica, replacing them with hydroxyl ions to combine with hydrogen ions and form pure water
