Installing Your Catalytic Carbon Filter
- Shut off water supply and relieve pressure from your 20-inch filter housing by opening the pressure relief button or downstream faucet.
- Remove the housing sump, discard the old filter, and clean the sump interior with mild soap and water before rinsing thoroughly.
- Insert the Aries AF-20-1053 cartridge into the housing, ensuring it seats properly on the center post or sump bottom.
- Lubricate the o-ring with food-grade silicone grease, thread the sump back onto the cap hand-tight, then restore water pressure slowly.
- Flush the new filter for 3-5 minutes to remove carbon fines and activate the catalytic media before using filtered water.
Where This Filter Works
The AF-20-1053 fits any standard 20-inch filter housing with 2.5-inch inner diameter, including systems from Pentek, Culligan, Hydronix, and most major brands. It works in municipal water systems where chloramines are present, as well as well water applications with hydrogen sulfide odor problems. Catalytic carbon offers superior performance compared to standard granular activated carbon when dealing with chloramines, which are increasingly common in city water treatment. For wells with both iron and sulfur issues, consider pre-filtration with sediment and oxidation stages before the catalytic carbon cartridge.
