Harmsco (HUR-170-HP) Hurricane Single Filter Housing 200 GPM; 2"

The Harmsco HUR-170-HP Hurricane combines cyclone separation with cartridge filtration in a single electropolished 304 stainless steel housing, rated for 200 GPM at 150 psi. This patented up-flow design with tangential entry prevents air entrapment while extending filter life and reducing maintenance costs across commercial, industrial, and whole-house applications.

Dimensions 40.5"H x 14.375"W x 13"D, 15" x 15" floor space
Certifications NSF 61 listed
INSTALLATION & USE

Installing the Hurricane HUR-170-HP

  1. Verify 72 inches of service height clearance for cartridge replacement and ensure the 15" x 15" footprint is level and structurally supported for the filled unit weight.
  2. Connect 2" NPT inlet and outlet ports with appropriate fittings, ensuring the tangential inlet entry is positioned correctly for cyclonic separation flow. Install 1" NPT drain line with shutoff valve for blowdown maintenance.
  3. Install your selected cartridge (consult micron rating and media type based on your water quality), seat the CPVC standpipe, and secure the fail-safe lid closure using brass wing nuts with EPDM rim gasket.
  4. Slowly open inlet valve to pressurize the housing, checking gauge sample ports (1/4" inlet and outlet) for proper pressure differential and inspecting all connections for leaks before bringing system to full operating flow.
  5. Establish a maintenance schedule based on differential pressure readings, typically replacing cartridges when pressure drop exceeds 20-25 psi or flow rate diminishes noticeably.
COMPATIBILITY

Cartridge and Application Range

The Harmsco HUR-170-HP accepts a wide range of cartridge micron ratings and media types including pleated polyester, melt-blown polypropylene, and carbon block cartridges. Applications span commercial and residential drinking water, reverse osmosis pre-filtration, desalination pre-treatment, cooling tower filtration, whole house systems, Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR) compliance, LT2 groundwater remediation, well water treatment, and industrial process water. The hurricane design is particularly effective for water sources with high suspended solids loads where the cyclone separator captures dense particles before they reach the cartridge, dramatically extending service life. Optional Buna-N or Viton gaskets accommodate chemical compatibility requirements, and 316 stainless steel or coated versions are available for aggressive desalination or marine environments.

🔧 Pro tip: Install a ball valve on the 1" drain port and perform weekly blowdowns in high-sediment applications. The cyclone separator collects dense solids at the bottom of the housing, and a 10-second flush removes accumulated debris without requiring cartridge replacement, often doubling your effective filter life between servicing.
